V.K.Thiruvenkata Chari was an eminent lawyer who practised mainly at the High Court of Madras and the Supreme Court of India. He was the Advocate General from 1951 to 1964 for the State of Madras.

He had a brilliant academic career at Presidency College and Law College at Madras winning most of the valued Prizes in his areas of study. He had his training at the bar under Shri S. Srinivasa Ayyangar, the great and distinguished lawyer who had himself been Advocate General of Madras. Later he joined the Chambers of the great Sir Alladi Krishnaswami Ayyar.
His proficiency in diverse fields of the law, such as Hindu Law, Insurance Law, Company and Commercial Laws, and Constitutional Law, came to be well-known. His intimate and deep knowledge of Company Law led not only to his acting on behalf of the best-known companies, but led to the Government of India calling upon him to advise it on changes in the Companies Act. He came to be considered an authority in the formative years of Constitutional Laws in India during the 1950's.

Mr Thiruvenkata Chari's erudition, sagacity, and wisdom were well-known. He was a "judicial activist" who saw law as an instrument of social change and considered it a dynamic force. The Chief Justice of Tamil Nadu in 1984, the Hon'ble Shri M.N. Chandurkar, unveiling Mr Chari's portrait at the Madras Bar Association, stated : "It may not be incorrect to say that his appointment as Advocate-General was really not so much an honour which was conferred on him, as an honour for the then State Government in having a lawyer of such stature and eminence as the Advocate General. Apart from the keen intellect which he possessed, and thorough knowledge of different branches of law, his arguments, as the (law) reports indicate, disclose the erudition and scholarship which he carried with characteristic humility. His arguments bore the stamp of that erudition and scholarship.....Behind an apparently rough exterior there was a heart that yearned for social justice".

He encouraged women lawyers and his juniors, and played an important part in the founding of such institutions as Vivekananda College, Vidya Mandir, and the Voluntary Health Service. He enjoyed doing crosswords and was a voracious reader (including of detective fiction !).

Thiruvenkata married Padmini T.Chari. Padmini was born on 8 Dec 1910. She died on 29 Jul 1995 in Madras.

From the Annual Issue of the School Magazine of Vidya Mandir, the well-known school of South Madras, for the academic year 1995-96:

" Mrs Padmini Chari was an extraordinary person and those of us who were lucky enough to know her, and others who were luckier still to work with her, knew her farsightedness. Vidya Mandir was her brain child; it was she who thought of it and contributed towards its establishment and working.

She was a person of enormous grit and courage. Although illness had forced her to stay at home, her presence behind the scenes continued to inspire and sustain. As Mrs Tara Satyanarayana said in the condolence meeting soon after her passing away, Mrs Chari worshipped and respected the twin principles of work and human being. She was respectful to both; she recognised people to be the greatest asset any institution could possess.

……. Her memory will continue to live on in this school. "
